our one-year anniversary!

So this is a month after the fact, but here's our lovely one-year anniversary! We went to Kansas City, ate at the Melting Pot (a first for both of us) and stayed at the bed and breakfast where we spent our honeymoon. It was a lovely way to celebrate this milestone in our marriage. And we always enjoy tasty and new dining experiences. The tomato basil cheddar fondue we had was delicious, and our server, who was great, set our dessert fondue (tiramisu) on fire as he poured it into the serving pot. Quite a dramatic meal!

After Mom almost forgot the cakes at home, and I almost forgot them at Grandma's, Mom said they were destined to be forgotten. Sure enough, we forgot to bring them with us. Of course, dessert was included in the meal, so we wouldn't have eaten them anyway. We partook the following week. It was a little dry, but all things considered, not bad. We could still figure out what flavors they were, which is a better fate than some anniversary wedding cake bits!

Steve Keck made my face in a latte

We went to Bluestem Bistro, which we love and dearly missed during our time in Philly. Ian ordered a grasshopper mocha, and Steve, one of our friends who is an awesome barista there, made my face in it. It really made us smile. I'm thankful for coffee dates with my husband, and good friends who bring joy to our lives, like Steve!

personalizing your blog

So I've been promising this for a little while, but life gets busy. Between laundry, work, cleaning, etc, I've let blogging get away from me. So here's the (hopefully!) anticipated post. By the way, Ian's singing me songs from Pirates of Penzance right now. Yay!

First off, I state this is for people with Blogger blogs. If you use something else, I don't know how to do it. Having said that, the Blogger template I recommend when you create your own header is the Minima family (the other templates with curves and fancy lines don't seem to mesh with uploaded images, but if you can make it work, props!). Personal preference, I don't like the stretch versions as much. They stretch blog text to fit the browser window instead of using a defined, never-changing width. But it all depends on you and your blog!

Anyway, select a Minima template under the Layout tab and the Pick New Template section. If there's a color scheme you like, pick it. If not, don't worry because you can edit the colors later to match your header. (And don't forget, when you change templates, it moves your widgets around in the sidebar. After you save the new template, you'll want to move them back.)

Speaking of the header... First off, you'll want to design the image. I use Photoshop, because I'm blessed to have a husband who designs images and documents and I design in my job. However, any photo-editing program will do. (I'm not putting detailed instructions because you'll know your own program better than I do. Questions for Photoshop you can leave in the comments.) I start with a photo, add text, then tweak the photo. You will have two options when you place the image in your header, so design according to your selection. You can:
  • leave it as just an image, and place it behind the blog title text. Remember that the blog header text won't look any different than it does right now (although you can edit font — limited options — and color later).
  • make the text part of the image, then use the image to replace your blog title. This allows you to place the title wherever you want on the image, and use any font you'd like. That's what I've done.
As you're designing the image, here's a couple tips I've learned. If you're using a non-stretch Minima template and you want the header to fit inside the outlined box, or if you want the image edges to line up with the edges of the posts/sidebar, you'll want to make sure it is exactly 648 pixels wide. (If you use a stretch template, you can forget about this, because the box stretches with the browser just like the text, so I'd recommend making it disappear... keep reading.) Currently, my header is 648 by 290 pixels, but don't worry about exact height — it adjusts for height, just not width. I'd suggest you make it not so tall that it fills the whole screen though.

Now, you might be wondering why I'm talking about a box, when there isn't a box around my header at all. I'll get to this momentarily. First, we need to get the image on your blog! In the Page Elements section under the Layout tab, you'll want to click Edit on the box that is your header. The text in this box should be your blog title. When you click Edit you'll get a pop-up window similar to this one, shown below, except instead of an image, there will be a place where you search for a file to upload.

personalizing your blog header

You'll click this option, find your file, then click OK. After it uploads, your image should show up where mine is in the above image. If it can't upload because the file is too big, you can reduce the resolution to 150dpi. Chances are though, size won't be a problem since your image isn't that big (per the size I specified earlier). If you're using it as a background, select the "behind title and description" option. If you are replacing the title with the image, select the "instead of title and description" option. Hit save, and you should be good to go! If you ever want to change the image, go back to this window, click Remove Image, then upload the new one. Blogger hosts these header images for this in the same spot (Picasa, via Google) as any other photos you upload using Blogger.

Now back to that outline box I was talking about earlier. All of the Minima templates have an outline around the header and dashed lines between the widgets in your sidebar. However, if you don't want these lines to show up, you can change the color of the lines to match the background, and presto, they essentially disappear. Speaking of changing your blog colors...

I mentioned earlier not to worry too much about the colors in the template you selected, because you can change all of it! In the Layout tab, you'll select the Fonts and Colors section. Note: the preview below the color-picker tool doesn't ever work for me. I make changes, save it, then view my blog. If I don't like something, I change it, save it, then look again. I recommend pulling colors similar to ones in  your header. Play around with it until you find a readable combination you like. And if you want to start over, you can always cheat and use the "revert to template default" option.

Sit back and admire your beautiful blog!

I do note, there are lots of sites with free templates you can download. I elected not to do this for various reasons (which I'll share if you're curious), but it's all up to you. If you use a free template, I'd suggest a simple one (background image as opposed to huge format changes) so your blog doesn't load slowly and chase away readers. Megan uses pretty, simple and free templates, if you'd like to see an example of a good one! If you have any questions, or if my instructions are confusing or missing a crucial step, leave me a comment and I'll add/fix it!

The 6 posts of Christmas: eastern Kansas tour

So I was hoping to have this, and a couple other catch-up blogs finished at the beginning of this week, but work has been crazy. I'll try to get the personalize-your-blog post up tomorrow!

A quick recap of our Christmas travels.
We drove to SC and stayed out on the farm, as Grandma Marilyn's house was full. It was great spending more time with Grandma Judy, and I hopefully have finally learned Pitch well enough that I don't have to relearn next time. However, I didn't even attempt Pinochle. The Scherling family Christmas was fantastic, hanging out with everyone, opening lots of presents (thanks again to everyone, we love everything!), and of course eating lots of food. We, however, failed to take photos.

After a couple of days, we traveled to Grandma and Grandpa's farm to meet all of my family for our Christmas. Again, more great food, and fun presents! Caleb got Apples to Apples, and this ended up being the highlight of the Christmas. I can't remember us ever playing a game where we all could play at the same time. And what was so memorable about this game? Mom put the green card down that said "disturbing." In the list of red cards anonymously put down for her to decide the best, was a little card that said "my love life." Can you guess who put that one down? Yup. My dad. I don't think I've seen either one of them laugh that hard in years. Here's some highlights in photos.

The 6 posts of Christmas: our gift exchange

The night before heading out to the family Christmases, we had our own Christmas in our apartment, which was a disaster since we were still wrapping presents and packing for our trip. But it was so nice to take time to sit by the tiny sparkling Christmas tree and enjoy seeing each other's faces as we opened the special presents we picked out for each other!

All in all, it was a great first married Christmas. And as fun as the presents were (and Ian's faces when he opened them!), it really was the best just to get to spend it together, knowing we get to do this together for the rest of our lives.

Stay tuned for our family Christmases, and instructions on how to personalize your own blog!

The 6 posts of Christmas: wedding bells

December 20 brought wedding bells for Nathan and Crystal! Ian had the honor of serving as best man for Nathan, so it was quite the whirlwind wedding weekend for us. Ian planned the bachelor party for Thursday night, which was dinner and an evening of Wii. Coincidentally, the evening they were out was the evening I was catching up blogging and blogged about Britni's wedding, where I was married-lady of honor. I really don't like the word matron, because I'm not a 50-year-old head nurse.

Anyway, Friday was the rehearsal and dinner, followed by a late evening watching Ian write his toast. Saturday was the wedding, and it was gorgeous. They are such a beautiful, Christ-centered couple and the ceremony reflected that. Not to mention Crystal looked gorgeous and they both are emotive, which mean a majority of the guests teared up too (myself included!). It was also wonderful because it was a reunion of sorts, and we got to spend some quality time with good friends we haven't seen in a long time, like Craig, Chris and Carrie, and Jeff and Jenni.

yay for marriage! Watch tomorrow for our first married Christmas gift exchange!

The 6 posts of Christmas: the young & the married

Our young married bible study held a lovely Christmas party. Andrea is a fantastic cook and made these great bread bowls with several different soup options. I hope to someday be able to make food as tasty as she does! We also enjoyed Elf, because it's not really Christmas until you watch it. And it wouldn't be a complete Christmas party without taking photos. The guys planned on doing a cheesy Christmas sweater photo, but couldn't find any cheesy sweaters because apparently lots of Greek houses along with the high school all had the same idea. We got a couple funny ones anyway!

The 6 posts of Christmas: Overmiller style

In early December, I got to join in a surprise birthday tea party for Grandma Judy (girls only, of course!), followed by the Overmiller Christmas out at the farm. It was so much fun spending all that time with family, especially after going over 8 months without seeing some of them (i.e. our time in Philadelphia).

The tea party was fantastic. The restaurant had great food, and a back hallway with all kinds of hats and jewelry. We all wore hats for dinner, and Sydni and Maddi kept changing their accessories between bites. Micki and Patti also had a special presentation, which involved a display board illustrating various Judy-isms, or phrases and mannerisms by which she is identified. A very informative and entertaining experience!

After the tea party, we went back to rejoin the fellows, who had been hunting and doing other manly things while we were gone. After some famous homemade chicken noodles for dinner, we did family Christmas.

and they're off!

It was lovely enjoying time with family. I got to play Barbies, color, and get beaten by Sydni at the game I Spy. The running activity for the day was silly insults, so we learned lots of new ones, like "sqweener," "monkey-burger," and "grammy-pants." One of my favorite quotes from the evening was by Maddi. We were coloring in her new Strawberry Shortcake coloring book when Ian came over and joined us. He kissed me on the forehead. Maddi said, "eww! Why does he kiss you so much?" This, coming from a little girl who has no qualms about admitting she has a boyfriend named Tate. A month later and it still makes me laugh!

Check back tomorrow for the third post of Christmas!

The 6 posts of Christmas: apartment decorating

My catch-up during the football game only got me through fall, so I'm going to attempt to catch up Christmas while I watch Ian make Drunken Tuscan Pasta. My progress is slowed because every so often I have to pause and fan our ridiculous smoke alarm, that goes off when you make toast. At any rate, I'm going to try and make all these short and sweet. First up, decorating our home for Christmas together, for the first time!

Fall in a Flash: things that made me smile

I can't really tie this post together with one theme, other than all of these items made me smile.

item 1: leaves. While running errands, we happened across a house with the largest collection of leaves that I've ever seen. It reminded me of the Whomping Willow from the Harry Potter movies, where it shakes all its leaves off at once. The fact that the car was covered in leaves (you couldn't see the windshield) added to the impression they all fell at the same time.

a shedding tree
The leaves are like a carpet covering the entire radius of the tree.

item 2: fall play. I drove home to surprise my family and watch Caleb in the annual fall play. Ian couldn't make it, sadly, as he had too much studio to work on over the weekend. The look on my mom's face seeing me walk in the house, and the sound in my dad's voice when I answered the phone were both priceless, and I'm glad I didn't miss Caleb's stellar performance! He played the town mortician, Mort Ripley.

our in-character photo. He's glad to be "the last man to let [me] down."

item 3: art. I feel I succeeded at my first attempt at a folded-book sculpture. Items such as these created by official artists sold for around $500 at the Philadelphia Anthropologie.

folded book sculpture
free art! Okay, under $20 when you count the cost of the book... my incomplete copy of the collected works of Jane Austen. I bought it, then after I read it all, I found one that really did have everything she wrote, not just the major 4 books this one contains.

item 4: Ian's comb over. So Ian was in dire need of a haircut before his yearbook picture, and he decided make the best of the situation by doing a comb over an cheesy smiles for the picture. I mean, our kids are going to laugh at it anyway, right? So the night before, he practiced his hair and smile.

This is my favorite shot.

So there you have it. Things that made me smile this fall. This catches me up through November. But wait! There's more! Next up is our first married Christmas season. Stay tuned!

Fall in a Flash: Football Fever

Football played a big part of our fall semester, since we attended almost all of Ren's games (he's kicker for Bethel this year). Ian's cousin's son Austin came to several of the home games, and he made them even more fun with his enthusiasm.

This is the view of the home field from the home stands. Unless we're confusing this with a different home game, this was one of the most exciting football games we've seen in a long time, which was won in the final seconds by the senior kicker.

We also took Fox to his first SC Redmen game, which was, in all honesty, very boring as they won 68-0. Ouch. Fox enjoyed experiencing a small Kansas town, and he loved the World's Largest Ball of Twine in Cawker City.
